Tongues on Fire
Tongues On Fire is a not-for-profit organisation and our goal is to provide a platform for independent film and arts with a link to South Asia. We celebrate South Asian culture, its vibrancy and its many dimensions through storytelling, live events, masterclasses and cinema screenings. The company provides a platform for emerging talent to showcase their work, offers networking occasions with industry leaders and provides wider learning opportunities for the filmmaking community.
Tongues On Fire is also the producer of The UK Asian Film Festival, previously The London Asian Film Festival, which aims to entertain, inform and educate. This annual film festival has been going strong for over twenty years and champions the arts and cinema, intertwining political and social messages with entertainment.
The UK Asian Film Festival
The UK Asian Film Festival offers an eclectic mix of films, stimulating interviews, outstanding masterclasses, workshops, live performances, visual arts exhibitions and an annual short film competition. We aim to celebrate, award and reward great films, filmmakers and artists from South Asia.
The festival provides a unique platform for South Asians working in film and media around the world. Our screenings and events include feature films, documentaries, short films, panel discussions, and educational and community screenings.
Cinema is a magical place. It appeals to all our senses, plugs into other people’s experiences and offers an alternate perspective. Watching a film at the cinema is a shared experience where you go on a collective journey with the rest of the audience. The tears, laughter, joy, suspense, experienced through a brief window into another world. What is more amazing than that? Our passion for South Asian arts and cinema remains as resilient and strong as it did when Tongues on Fire began.
Founding directors Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry and Mrs Harvinder Nath conceived the festival in 1999. Both Pushpinder and Harvinder recognised the impact films can have on society, particularly those which tackle complex, challenging issues.
Over the years, Tongues on Fire has brought the work of acclaimed talents in cinema including award-winning filmmakers. Some of our special guests include Mira Nair (Salaam Bombay, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake), Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, Viceroy’s House), Aparna Sen (15 Park Avenue), Ramesh Sippy (Sholay, Andaz) and Meera Syal (Anita and Me), actors Shabana Azmi, Mahira Khan, Nandita Das, Madhur Jaffrey, Kiron Kher, the Bachchan family, Radhika Apte, Zeenat Aman and Bollywood legend Helen.
